The Distinctive Pinto Horse
|
There are horse breeds known as color breeds. One example of a color breed is a Palomino. Another example is the Pinto. These horses are also called paint horses because it appears they have been splashed with paint. In parts of Europe these horses are also called piebald, coloured or skewbald. This type of horse can be any breed. The requirement is that the horse must be the proper color with the proper coat pattern. The ptHA is an associated devoted to the breeding and recognition of this gorgeous breed.
Let's take a look at the patterns and colors that define this majestic equine. Piebald is a primarily UK term that refers to a white and black spotting pattern. Skewbald is another UK term that refers to brown and white spotting. Oddbald is the old fashioned term for a horse that sports three colors with the primary colors being brown and white. Then there's the Tobiano pattern. This is the most common pattern and features rounded marks with white legs and a 50/50 distribution of color. The head usually sports a blaze, stripe or star.
Another pattern is the Overo. This pattern is recognized by irregular, sharp horizontal markings that are dark in color. The face is white, sometimes with blue eyes. Sabino is another pattern which is sometimes confused with roan. This pattern features white high up on the legs and spotting on the belly. White markings are seen on the face. Tovero is a mixture of the Overo and Tobiano pattern and often features blue eyes on a dark colored head. The American Paint Horse is commonly confused with the Pinto. All Paints can be Pintos, but not all Pintos can be Paint Horses.
You will find different kinds of Pinto horses. There are hunting type horses which include breeds like the Thoroughbred. Saddle types include horses like the American Quarter Horse and Tennessee Walking Horse. Pleasure pintos may be of Arabian descent. Even miniature horses and ponies can feature this distinctive coat coloring. You will find breeding this type of horse rewarding and fulfilling. Whether you have a stable filled with stallions and mares or one broodmare you'd like to try breeding, this pursuit can make a great hobby or even a lucrative career.
